Many tourists believe that Hollywood stars are awarded based solely on talent, but the process is largely a commercial one. To receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a celebrity must first be nominated (usually by a fan club or film studio). If the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce selects them, a fee must be paid—as of 2024, the cost is $75,000. This money is used to manufacture and install the star and maintain the Walk of Fame itself. Half of the fee usually goes to the Hollywood Historic Trust. Because of this high cost and the requirement that the celebrity must promise to attend the unveiling ceremony in person, some major stars like Clint Eastwood and Julia Roberts famously do not have stars on the Walk of Fame.
