One of the most tragic and eerie events in Hollywood history occurred in 1932 at the Hollywood Sign (then still reading 'HOLLYWOODLAND'). Peg Entwistle, a 24-year-old British stage actress who had struggled to find success in the film industry after her first movie role was largely cut, climbed a workman's ladder to the top of the 50-foot-tall letter 'H' and jumped to her death. Her suicide note read, 'I am afraid, I am a coward. I am sorry for everything.' Ironically, a letter arrived at her home the day after her death offering her the lead role in a play about a woman who commits suicide. Entwistle has since been dubbed 'The Hollywood Sign Girl,' and her ghost is rumored to haunt the trails surrounding the sign, often accompanied by the scent of gardenias, her favorite perfume.
