Description
For decades, animated films were relegated to their own technical categories. In 1992, Disney’s 'Beauty and the Beast' shattered the glass ceiling by becoming the first animated feature ever nominated for Best Picture. While it didn't win (losing to 'The Silence of the Lambs'), its nomination was the primary reason the Academy eventually created the 'Best Animated Feature' category in 2001, to ensure animation was consistently recognized alongside live-action films.
