Description
While the Marvel Cinematic Universe made 'post-credit scenes' a mandatory tradition for fans, the practice actually started decades earlier. The first notable use of a post-credit 'stinger' was in the 1966 spy comedy 'The Silencers.' It featured a short clip of Matt Helm (Dean Martin) surrounded by women, with a message promising his return in a sequel. Later, 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off' (1986) popularized the 'breaking the fourth wall' stinger, where Matthew Broderick tells the audience to go home. These scenes were originally intended as a reward for the few audience members who stayed to watch the names of the crew, but they have since evolved into essential marketing tools used to tease future franchise installments.
