In Pixar's 'The Incredibles,' the character Edna Mode famously rants against superheroes wearing capes because they are a safety hazard. This wasn't just a funny plot point; it was a nod to the immense difficulty animators faced in the early 2000s when rendering cloth. In CGI, simulating the way fabric moves, folds, and reacts to wind is computationally expensive and complex. At the time, 'The Incredibles' was one of the most technically challenging films Pixar had ever made because it featured humans as main characters (which are harder to animate than toys or fish) and required hundreds of custom-designed digital 'costumes.' By making 'No Capes' a rule for the characters, director Brad Bird saved his animation team from hundreds of hours of additional physics simulations, while simultaneously creating one of the most memorable catchphrases in animation history.
