Description
Before 1905, movies were shown in vaudeville houses or traveling tents. This changed when Harry Davis and John Harris opened the first 'Nickelodeon' in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The name combined 'nickel' (the cost of admission) and 'odeion' (the Greek word for theater). Unlike modern theaters with set showtimes, Nickelodeons ran a continuous loop of short films from morning until midnight. They were immensely popular among immigrants and the working class because the films were silent, meaning a person didn't need to speak English to understand the story. Within two years, there were 8,000 Nickelodeons across the U.S., creating the first massive demand for content that forced the small film production companies to move West to California for better year-round filming weather.
