Description
In 1962, the Best Director category saw a unique situation that has never been repeated in the same way. Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins shared the Academy Award for Best Director for 'West Side Story.' This was the first time the directing award was given to a duo. However, the partnership was fraught with tension; Robbins, the legendary choreographer, was actually fired during production for falling behind schedule and going over budget. Despite this, Wise insisted that Robbins receive shared credit because his vision and dance numbers were so integral to the film's success. This remains a rare example of a split directing win. While the Coen Brothers and the Daniels have won as duos since then, Wise and Robbins are the only pair to win who were not an established, long-term directing team before the project began.
