Description
For decades, the Academy Awards largely ignored the horror genre, viewing it as 'low-brow' entertainment. This changed in 1992 when 'The Silence of the Lambs' (1991) became the first—and so far only—horror film to win the Oscar for Best Picture. Not only did it win the top prize, but it also became only the third film in history to sweep the 'Big Five' categories: Best Picture, Best Director (Jonathan Demme), Best Actor (Anthony Hopkins), Best Actress (Jodie Foster), and Best Screenplay. Anthony Hopkins achieved this despite having only 16 minutes of screen time, one of the shortest performances to ever win a Lead Actor trophy. While films like 'The Exorcist' and 'Get Out' were later nominated, 'The Silence of the Lambs' remains the gold standard for horror's acceptance by the Hollywood establishment.
