Despite the language barrier and extreme violence, it grossed over $612 million. It tapped into an underserved 'faith-based' audience that Hollywood had largely ignored. Its success proved that niche markets, if motivated by a specific cultural or religious interest, could drive a film to global blockbuster status without the support of a major studio’s traditional marketing machine.
