Description
It seems contradictory to win a 'screenplay' award for a movie with no dialogue, but Michel Hazanavicius did just that in 2012 for 'The Artist.' Although the film is a silent movie, a screenplay is still required to detail the action, timing, facial expressions, and 'intertitles' (the text cards that show dialogue). The screenplay for 'The Artist' was only 40 pages long, compared to the standard 100-120 pages for a talking film. Hazanavicius was nominated for Best Original Screenplay, and while he did not win the screenplay award (losing to Woody Allen for 'Midnight in Paris'), the film went on to win Best Picture and Best Director. This highlighted a vital truth about Hollywood: a screenplay is a blueprint for visual storytelling, not just a list of lines for actors to speak.
