Description
When sound designer Gary Rydstrom was tasked with creating the voice of the Tyrannosaurus Rex for 'Jurassic Park' (1993), he faced a unique problem: no one knew what a dinosaur sounded like. To create a sound that was both terrifying and organic, Rydstrom combined the sounds of several different animals. The T-Rex's iconic, bone-chilling roar was actually a slowed-down recording of a baby elephant's scream. He layered this with the sound of an alligator's gurgle for the low-frequency vibrations and a tiger's snarl for the predatory edge. For the sound of the T-Rex breathing, he used the sound of air escaping from a whale's blowhole. This 'sonic cocktail' created a creature that felt physically present and terrifyingly real, earning Rydstrom two Academy Awards for his work on the film.
