Description
In the 1930s, screen credits were vastly different from today. While modern movies have thousands of names scrolling for ten minutes, 'The Wizard of Oz' (1939) featured only a small fraction of its contributors. Most notably, the 124 little people who played the Munchkins were not individually credited in the film's original release. They were collectively referred to as 'The Munchkins,' and many were paid less per week than the dog, Terry (who played Toto). This was common practice in the Studio System era, where only the stars and 'above-the-line' crew (directors, producers) received recognition. It took decades of union negotiations for 'below-the-line' workers—from makeup artists to set builders—to finally earn the right to see their names on the big screen.
