Description
If you have ever heard a metallic, screeching echo in a horror or suspense film, you were likely hearing the Waterphone. Invented by Richard Waters, this instrument consists of a stainless steel resonator bowl with bronze rods of varying lengths around the rim. It is partially filled with water, and the player use a bow or mallets on the rods. As the water moves, it shifts the pitch and resonance, creating an organic, 'weeping' sound. It has been used in countless legendary films, including 'Poltergeist,' 'Aliens,' and 'The Matrix.' The Waterphone is so effective at creating tension that it has become a horror legend in its own right. It is a prime example of an instrument designed not for melody, but for the physical sensation of unease that supports legendary cinematic scares.
