Description
If you've ever noticed a very specific, high-pitched scream in an action movie when someone falls, you’re likely hearing the 'Wilhelm Scream.' First recorded for the 1951 film 'Distant Drums' for a scene where a man is pulled underwater by an alligator, it became a legendary 'Easter egg' for sound designers. Ben Burtt, the sound designer for 'Star Wars,' found the recording in the Warner Bros. library and used it when a Stormtrooper fell down a shaft. He named it after 'Private Wilhelm,' a character who screamed it in the 1953 film 'The Charge at Feather River.' Since then, it has appeared in over 400 films, including almost every 'Star Wars' and 'Indiana Jones' movie. It serves as a secret handshake between Hollywood sound editors across generations.
