Description
Before David Bowie became the 'Chameleon of Pop,' he studied the art of mime under the renowned artist Lindsay Kemp. This training had a profound impact on his stagecraft and his ability to create different personas, such as Ziggy Stardust and the Thin White Duke. In 1967, Bowie even performed a mime piece called 'The Jet Propelled Weathervane' and opened for Kemp’s dance troupe. His use of dramatic makeup, expressive body language, and theatrical storytelling was directly derived from his mime background. Even his famous 'moonwalk' style glide in the 'Glass Spider' tour and the isolation movements in his early videos were techniques he learned during this period. Bowie often said that mime taught him how to communicate through silence and gesture, which he later used to captivate stadium-sized audiences.
