Description
A striking feature of David Bowie was his seemingly different-colored eyes. Many fans believed he had heterochromia, a condition where eyes are naturally different colors. However, his left eye was permanently dilated due to a condition called anisocoria. This was the result of a playground fight in 1962 with his friend George Underwood over a girl. Underwood punched Bowie in the eye, and his fingernail accidentally scratched the surface, causing the pupil to remain permanently fixed in a dilated position. While it caused Bowie difficulty with depth perception, it created an otherworldly, 'alien' appearance that he later embraced for his Ziggy Stardust and other personas. Remarkably, Bowie and Underwood remained lifelong friends; Underwood even designed the covers for Bowie’s 'Hunky Dory' and 'Ziggy Stardust' albums.
