In 1977, Elvis Costello was banned from 'Saturday Night Live' for over a decade due to an unplanned performance. His record label wanted him to play his hit 'Less Than Zero,' but Costello felt the song's British political themes wouldn't resonate with an American audience. A few seconds into the song, he famously stopped the band, saying, 'I'm sorry, ladies and gentlemen, there's no reason to do this song here.' He then launched into 'Radio Radio,' a song that criticized the corporate control of broadcasting—the very thing the show's producers had forbidden him from playing. Producer Lorne Michaels was so furious he reportedly stood off-camera flipping Costello the bird and banned him from the show until 1989. In 1999, Costello spoofed the incident by interrupting the Beastie Boys during the SNL 25th Anniversary special to play the same song.
