Description
The cover of Nirvana’s 'Nevermind,' featuring a four-month-old baby swimming toward a dollar bill on a fishhook, is one of the most iconic images in music history. Kurt Cobain conceived the idea while watching a television show about water births. He wanted an image of a baby underwater to symbolize the loss of innocence in a consumerist society. The baby, Spencer Elden, was the son of a friend of the photographer, Kirk Weddle. The shoot took only a few minutes. Interestingly, the record label was worried about the baby’s nudity and prepared an alternative cover that cropped the image. Cobain refused, famously stating that anyone offended by the image must be a 'closet pedophile.' The dollar bill was added digitally later. The album went on to sell over 30 million copies, ending the dominance of hair metal and bringing grunge to the mainstream.
