Description
Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' is the definitive anthem of the 1990s grunge movement, but its title came from a joke. Kathleen Hanna, the lead singer of the punk band Bikini Kill and a friend of Kurt Cobain, spray-painted the phrase 'Kurt Smells Like Teen Spirit' on his bedroom wall one night. Cobain thought it was a poetic, revolutionary slogan about his influence on the youth. However, Hanna was actually mocking him; 'Teen Spirit' was a popular brand of deodorant for teenage girls that Cobain's then-girlfriend used, and she was saying he smelled like her deodorant. Cobain didn't realize the product existed until months after the song was released. Despite its humble origins, the song propelled the album 'Nevermind' to the top of the charts, knocking Michael Jackson off the number one spot.
