Description
The balalaika is a Russian stringed instrument with a characteristic triangular body and three strings. It comes in various sizes, from the tiny prima balalaika to the massive sub-bass balalaika, which must be rested on a point on the floor. A unique feature of the prima balalaika is that two of its three strings are tuned to the exact same note (E, E, A). It is primarily played with the fingers using a variety of rapid strumming and 'pizzicato' techniques. Historically, the triangular shape was adopted because it was easier and cheaper to manufacture from flat pieces of wood than a rounded lute. It became the symbol of Russian folk music in the late 19th century when Vasily Andreyev standardized the instrument for orchestral use. Today, it is famous for its bright, percussive sound and its use in traditional songs like 'Kalinka.'
