Description
Bruce Springsteen's 'Born in the U.S.A.' is one of the most misunderstood hits in history. While its booming chorus and stadium-rock production sound patriotic, the lyrics are actually a scathing critique of the Vietnam War and the poor treatment of returning veterans. Springsteen wrote it as a protest song, but its 'feel-good' sound led many politicians, including President Ronald Reagan, to use it as a patriotic anthem during campaigns. Springsteen famously asked Reagan's campaign to stop using the song. The track was one of seven top 10 hits from the same album, tying a record set by Michael Jackson's 'Thriller.' Its success solidified Springsteen’s image as 'The Boss' of American rock and roll.
