Description
The double bass is the largest and lowest-pitched member of the orchestral string family. Uniquely, double bass players use one of two distinct types of bows: the French bow or the German bow. The French bow is similar in design to a violin or cello bow and is held with an 'overhand' grip, which many players feel offers more precision and control for delicate passages. The German bow, which has a larger frog (the part of the bow the player holds), is held with an 'underhand' grip, similar to how one might hold a saw. The German grip is often favored for its ability to apply heavy weight and power to the thick strings of the bass. While both bows are capable of producing world-class results, the choice often depends on regional tradition or the personal preference of the player’s first teacher. This is the only modern string instrument where such a fundamental choice in equipment exists.
