Description
Duran Duran, the leaders of the Second British Invasion and MTV icons, took their name from a character in a classic science fiction film. The band members were fans of the 1968 cult film 'Barbarella,' starring Jane Fonda. In the movie, the primary villain is a scientist named Dr. Durand Durand (played by Milo O'Shea). The band shortened it and removed the 'd' at the end to create 'Duran Duran.' They even performed at a Birmingham club called Rum Runner, where the movie was frequently discussed. Their stylish videos, often filmed in exotic locations, helped define the 1980s aesthetic. Songs like 'Rio' and 'Hungry Like the Wolf' made them international superstars. In a full-circle moment, the band later named their 1997 album 'Medazzaland' after a character in the same cinematic universe.
