Description
Before they were Radiohead, the band was known as 'On a Friday,' a name they chose because that was the day they usually rehearsed in the music room at Abingdon School. After signing with EMI in 1991, the label requested that they change their name to something more professional and evocative. The band chose 'Radiohead' after the song 'Radio Head' by the Talking Heads, from their 1986 album 'True Stories.' Lead singer Thom Yorke and the rest of the band were huge fans of David Byrne and the Talking Heads' experimental approach. Interestingly, the Talking Heads song was actually inspired by a character in a Stephen King story who can receive radio signals in his head. Radiohead went on to become one of the most critically acclaimed bands in the world, releasing groundbreaking albums like 'OK Computer' and 'Kid A.'
