Description
Santana's 'Smooth,' featuring Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty, was the final number-one hit of the 1990s and the first of the 2000s. It spent 12 weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100. The song was a massive comeback for Carlos Santana, who hadn't had a top 10 hit in 28 years. Thomas wrote the lyrics for his wife, Marisol Maldonado, originally envisioning George Michael for the vocals before being asked to sing it himself. The track won three Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Its blend of Latin rock guitar and pop-rock sensibilities helped Santana’s album 'Supernatural' become one of the best-selling albums of all time. Billboard eventually ranked 'Smooth' as the second-most successful song in the history of the Hot 100, trailing only 'The Twist' by Chubby Checker.
