Description
Adolphe Sax, a Belgian instrument maker, sought to create an instrument that bridged the gap between woodwinds and brass. He wanted something that had the power of brass but the agility of woodwinds. The result was the saxophone, patented in 1846. Though made of brass, it is classified as a woodwind because it uses a single-reed mouthpiece, similar to a clarinet. The conical shape of the body allows for overblowing at the octave, giving it a fingering system easier than many other woodwinds. There are eight members of the saxophone family, but the most common are the Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Baritone. While Sax originally intended his invention for military bands and classical music, the saxophone found its true home in Jazz during the 1920s, where its vocal-like tone and wide dynamic range made it the lead voice for legends like John Coltrane and Charlie Parker.
