Description
Niccolò Paganini was the first true 'rock star' of classical music, a violin virtuoso whose technical abilities were so extraordinary that people rumored he had sold his soul to the devil. He revolutionized violin playing with techniques like left-hand pizzicato, double-stop harmonics, and unorthodox tunings. Paganini performed from memory and used dramatic stage presence to captivate audiences, often snapping strings during a performance and continuing on the remaining ones. His '24 Caprices for Solo Violin' (1820) remain some of the most difficult pieces ever written for the instrument. He was also a talented composer and guitarist. His influence extended to other composers like Franz Liszt, who sought to achieve the same level of technical mastery on the piano that Paganini had achieved on the violin. Paganini’s legacy lives on as the ultimate symbol of instrumental virtuosity.
