Description
Ada Lovelace (born Augusta Ada Byron) was a mathematician who realized that Charles Babbage's Analytical Engine could do far more than simple math. Her genius was 'poetical science'—the ability to see how technology could integrate with society. In her extensive notes on the machine, she wrote an algorithm for calculating Bernoulli numbers, making her the world's first computer programmer. She also theorized that the machine could manipulate symbols according to rules, potentially allowing it to compose music or produce graphics. This conceptual leap from 'calculation' to 'computation' is why she is revered as a visionary of the computer age. The programming language 'Ada' was named in her honor in 1980.
