Description

On 18 April 2015, a suicide bomber on a motorcycle struck a bank in the city of Jalalabad in Nangarhar Province. The explosion claimed at least 33 lives and injured about 100 individuals. The attack was claimed by the Islamic State – Khorasan Province, marking one of its first major bombings since its formation earlier that year. The choice of a crowded bank as a target highlighted the group’s willingness to strike civilian-economic infrastructure. The bombing heightened fears of the spread of IS-Khorasan in eastern Afghanistan and prompted tighter security measures around banks and public buildings.
