On 16 November 1974, Afghanistan created a study group to explore renewable energy options such as small-scale hydropower, solar heating, and wind use in rural areas. Engineers and researchers assessed which regions could support alternative-energy installations. Initial pilot projects focused on remote villages with limited electricity access. The study group also evaluated cost, feasibility, and long-term energy benefits. Its findings later shaped rural development programs during the late 1970s.
