On 29 November 1972, Afghanistan expanded its groundwater monitoring initiative in response to growing concerns about declining well levels. Hydrologists performed surveys to measure recharge rates and contamination risks. The expansion included installation of monitoring wells in several provinces. Data gathered from these sites supported sustainable water-use planning. The effort strengthened national understanding of groundwater resources.
