Afghanistan — Historical Events Description
On 15–16 April 2012 multiple coordinated attacks were launched across Afghanistan, including in Kabul, Nangarhar, Paktia and Logar provinces. Insurgents (primarily the Taliban and suspected allies) hit embassies, government buildings, ISAF bases and hotels. The capital witnessed explosions and gun-battles that lasted hours as militants attempted to undermine security and project strength in the face of international transition. These attacks marked the opening of the so-called “spring offensive” of that year, aimed at destabilising the Afghan government and its international partners.
Afghan security forces, with support from international troops, managed to repel most of the assaults, though civilian casualties and confusion were high. The event illustrated the persistent capability of insurgent networks even as foreign forces began drawing down. It also highlighted the fragility of security in urban centres and the challenge of safeguarding diplomatic and governmental infrastructure.
