On 5 June 1986, a series of clashes erupted between Soviet-backed Afghan government forces and mujahideen fighters outside Gardez. The fighting occurred near key supply lines that both sides sought to control. Government units attempted to reinforce the city while opposition groups targeted convoys. The battle caused several disruptions to Soviet supply movements and heightened tensions in Paktia Province. These engagements formed part of a long cycle of offensives in the southeastern region.
