On 13 June 1987, Soviet-backed government troops conducted air and ground operations near Kandahar. The aim was to weaken mujahideen positions that threatened transportation links. Resistance fighters responded with ambushes and rocket fire. The engagement added to the growing perception that the war was becoming increasingly costly for the government. These clashes were part of a pattern of persistent fighting in southern Afghanistan throughout the late 1980s.
