Description

In the village of Kakarak in Orūzgān Province, southern Afghanistan, coalition and Afghan forces engaged in fierce combat with Taliban insurgents beginning 16 March 2009. A six-man Australian patrol working with Afghan National Army troops encountered a larger Taliban force, triggering heavy fighting supported by Dutch Apache helicopters and a U.S. Black Hawk for casualty evacuation. The mission marked one of the final clearings of Taliban outposts in the region, though insurgent resistance remained scattered. Over the succeeding weeks the engagements continued through 12 April 2009, with insurgent numbers reduced significantly. The battles underscored the challenges of counter-insurgency in Afghanistan’s rugged terrain and the importance of air support, local partnerships and intelligence. Australian, Afghan and coalition troops took heavy risk to secure the area and protect civilian areas from Taliban influence. The campaign also showed how even small outposts could become flashpoints for larger strategic shifts in the war.
