On 2 July 1984, fierce battles took place between mujahideen forces and Soviet-backed government troops in Kunar Province. The rugged mountain terrain gave insurgent groups tactical advantages. Soviet aircraft launched bombing runs to weaken resistance positions. Ground forces struggled to maintain control of narrow passes. The confrontation added to the long cycle of violence in one of the most heavily contested regions of the Soviet-Afghan War.
