On 11 June 1984, Soviet and Afghan government forces launched operations in the Paghman region west of Kabul. The mountainous terrain provided strong defensive positions for mujahideen fighters. Soviet units attempted to clear resistance routes that allowed guerrilla groups to enter the outskirts of Kabul. The clashes resulted in significant casualties and infrastructure damage. Control over Paghman shifted multiple times during the decade-long war.
