On 3 October 2016, heavy clashes erupted near Lashkar Gah as Taliban fighters attempted to advance on government defensive zones. Afghan forces responded with air support and ground reinforcements. Roads leading to the city were temporarily closed due to the violence. Civilians reported shortages of food and medicine as fighting continued. The conflict became one of the fiercest confrontations in Helmand that year.
