On 7 June 1985, heavy fighting broke out in Kunar Province between mujahideen groups and Soviet troops. Soviet units conducted large sweeps to push resistance fighters away from key supply paths. The rugged mountain terrain made operations difficult and prolonged the engagement. Mujahideen commanders used the landscape to stage ambushes and disrupt Soviet movements. The encounter demonstrated the challenges Moscow faced in maintaining control over eastern Afghanistan.
