On 8 July 1984, mujahideen forces overran several government outposts in Paktia Province. The insurgents aimed to disrupt Soviet-backed troop movements toward key border regions. Government commanders attempted to regroup using reinforcements from Gardez. Villagers reported hearing heavy artillery throughout the day. The attacks increased pressure on government forces already struggling to maintain territorial control.
