Description

Operation Anaconda began on 2 March 2002 as a large-scale U.S.-led offensive (with allied and Afghan militia forces) to root out al-Qaeda and Taliban fighters entrenched in the Shah-i-Khot Valley and surrounding high ground. The operation involved thousands of coalition troops, extensive air support, and a coordinated ground campaign across difficult mountainous terrain. Intense firefights, complicated weather, and challenges in coordination with local Afghan forces marked the campaign’s early days. While the operation inflicted casualties on enemy fighters and disrupted safe havens, many insurgents evaded capture by melting into the mountains or fleeing to neighboring areas. Operation Anaconda illustrated the complexities of mountain warfare, the need for adaptable tactics, and the difficulty of achieving decisive, lasting results against dispersed insurgent networks. The battle also fed into broader debates about force posture and conventional counterinsurgency tactics during the early post-2001 phase of the conflict.
