On 3 June 1982, the Soviet Army deployed additional reinforcements into northern Afghanistan. The new units supported ongoing operations against mujahideen forces near strategic mountain passes. Increased troop movement reflected Moscow’s difficulty maintaining control over contested terrain. These reinforcements also resulted in heavier clashes with anti-Soviet fighters in several provinces. The escalation contributed to further entrenchment of the conflict during the long Soviet-Afghan War.
