On 30 June 2016, Taliban units overran security forces in Sangin District, a highly contested area of Helmand Province. Afghan troops withdrew to avoid further casualties after days of sustained fighting. The district was strategically important because of its location along major supply routes. Local residents reported displacement as insurgent fighters took control. The event highlighted continuing challenges in stabilizing Helmand.
