On 22 August 1966, military factions made an unsuccessful attempt to overthrow President Arturo Illia, just one month before the successful coup that removed him from office. The attempt reflected growing tensions between the government and the armed forces. Political unrest was widespread, fueled by disagreements over economic policy and governance. Although the attempt failed, it weakened Illia’s standing. The event highlighted the fragile state of Argentine democracy during the period.
