The Puesto Hernández oil field, located between Neuquén and Mendoza, was discovered on 6 January 1961. The discovery came during a period when Argentina was working to expand its domestic energy supply. Geological surveys confirmed significant reserves that were valuable for industrial growth. The field became a major contributor to national petroleum production for decades. Its output strengthened Argentina’s energy sector and reduced dependence on foreign oil. The site remains one of the country's most important historical energy discoveries.
