Neuquén Province was officially established on 15 January 1955. The region had previously been part of the National Territories system. Provincial status granted more political autonomy and improved local governance. The decision encouraged development of energy projects, including hydroelectric plants. Neuquén later became central to oil and gas production, especially in the Vaca Muerta formation. The province grew rapidly as infrastructure improved. Its creation marked a turning point in Patagonia’s modern development.
