On 1 April 1902, Argentina began its first organized hydrographic survey of the Río de la Plata. Naval specialists measured depths, currents, and sediment conditions. The data improved navigation for commercial ships entering Buenos Aires’ ports. The project also identified hazards that had caused shipwrecks in previous decades. Results guided updates to nautical charts and lighthouse placements. The survey strengthened maritime safety and supported international trade. It marked a major advance in national scientific mapping efforts.
