On 29 July 1966, military forces violently intervened in Argentine universities following the 1966 coup. Police stormed campuses, arresting professors and students and destroying research facilities. The crackdown forced many academics into exile. It caused long-term damage to scientific and educational development in the country. The event remains a defining example of state repression in the academic sphere. Its anniversary is remembered as a symbol of defending academic freedom.
