Fierce fighting occurred as Australian troops engaged in the Battle of Lone Pine on 2 August 1915. The battle formed part of the Gallipoli campaign. Combat took place in confined trenches. Casualties were extremely high. Several Victoria Crosses were awarded. The battle became symbolic of sacrifice. Lone Pine remains a major site of remembrance.
