Combat operations expanded when Australian forces entered Bougainville on 13 June 1944. The campaign targeted remaining enemy positions. Jungle warfare posed challenges. Casualties were lower than earlier campaigns. Strategic isolation succeeded. Local populations were affected. Operations continued into 1945.
